February Update

Greetings and Salutations,

Yes, I’m very well aware that I am a slacker. But you love me anyway!

So! There’s really not too much going on. Red cards are spare- she gets maybe one a month. She has completed all of her sight word lists and is currently acing her spelling tests (yes, kindergarten and spelling tests!)

Her school participates in what is known as Accelerated Reader. Every Tuesday afternoon I go to the class and read a book on a subject that supports the teacher’s lessons. After I’m done I ask a few questions to make sure they understood what I read, then I call them to me one by one to take a five question reading comprehension quiz. Depending on the grade they get on the quiz, they receive points. At their level, the points are .5 for 100%, .4 for 80%, and .3 for 60%.

She is currently sitting at 5.8 points đŸ™‚ But Lil Bit also gets tested twice. As class is dismissed (car riders & bus riders), I test Lil Bit on her comprehension on what was just read, and then on a book that she read herself!

Every week we take a book from the library and we work through it together. By the third time, she is reading the words on her own. Her favorite book so far was one on a bug: ‘Weird Walking Sticks’ by Greg Roza.

If you want to keep up with what books Lil Bit reads on her own, you can check them out here on her goodreads list on the right- Goodreads: Lil Bit’s Reading.

Currently she has read:

  • Casey Cat Has a Hat (TAG Reader beginning phonics)
  • Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss
  • Ten Apples Up on Top by Leo LeSieg
  • Hi! Fly Guy by Tedd Arnold
  • Dora the Explorer: Dora’s Perfect Pumpkin
  • The Snow Child by Harriet Ziefert
  • Stella, Queen of the Snow by Marie-Loiuse Gay
  • Fly High, Fly Guy! by Tedd Arnold
  • Weird Walking Sticks by Greg Roza

She really likes the ‘Fly Guy’ series and I am waiting to get her all of the books. I think there are currently 14 in the series. It’s really cute actually.

Lil Bit is currently reading ‘Colorful Peacocks’. Luckily she enjoys the nonfiction as much as she does the fiction.

Also, her school works with a website called DreamBox which is all math activities and ratings. She is advanced in multiple areas, even performing at 2nd grade levels in Problem Solving.

Here is her progress report as of 2/22/13

Aside from that, weekly I volunteer for a full day in the school library. It is fun and I love being in that sort of environment. Surrounded by books and students? Love it.

Next week I’ll have three days to volunteer as the book fair is returning! Monday, Tuesday, and Friday at the Book Fair, Thursday back at the dance studio.

She is off all this week for Winter Break.

Lil Bit amazes me more and more every day. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.

My Life as a Dancem0m

Stories inspired by life as a mother of 2 (one competitive dancer, one who dances and competes in karate). Also, stepmom to 3 teenage boys. I'm also a dancer, and an Early Childhood Teacher. I've been a two time walker of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure, two time participant in the Relay for Life, and so far, have jumped into a cold lake once for the Polar Plunge, MN.
